The story of Antigone is the final installment in Sophocles’ trilogy, The Theban Plays. The plot follows our titular character, Antigone, as she defies King Creon’s decree by burying her brother, Polynices, who was declared a traitor. Creon, adamant about upholding the state’s authority, orders Antigone’s execution. Antigone, however, believes her actions justified by her belief in honoring family and divine laws above all else. Despite warnings, Creon remains stubborn, leading to a series of tragic events including the suicides of Antigone, Haemon (Creon’s son and Antigone’s fiancé), and Creon’s wife, Eurydice. Through this, Sophocles explores themes of morality, authority, and the consequences of pride, leaving audiences trapped in the clash between individual conscience and state law.
